Thirsty For A Draft...

Well we're finally getting around to within a few hundred thousand heartbeats of the NFL's upcoming 2010 Draft and they've changed the event on us this year. Here's what is going on from NFL.Com/draft:
The NFL draft moves to primetime for the first time in 2010, with the first round taking place Thurs., April 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by the second and third rounds on Fri., April 23 at 6 p.m. ET. Rounds 4-7 will be held Sat., April 24 at 10 a.m. ET. Watch the entire draft live on NFL Network.
So I thought it was time to come out of my self-induced coma and share some thoughts concerning the Packers upcoming draft. The Green Bay Packers have their pick in each of the 7 rounds, alternating positions with the Philadelphia Eagles on who goes 23rd or 24th in each round. The official Draft Order will shake up some more once the Compensatory Picks are awarded to any team that has lost a valuable free agent in the previous year. The Packers have a chance to get a decent round pick for DT Colin Cole who signed with Seattle and started 15 games for them last year.

The Packers still have needs on the Offensive Line, primarily backup positions across the board with some attention on the starters at LG and the C positions. The Packers must certainly be looking at the backup RB and 3rd down RB positions as well. The Defensive line needs some backup depth, the Linebackers are looking for a starters, and depth, and the Secondary is only as stable as the next injury allows them to be.

Glancing over the mock drafts, many are still convinced the Packers are looking for a Tackle in the 1st round, I would bet on a LB or DB before any other position, whether GM Ted Thompson is following the Best Player Available rule or not.

________________________________

23.  Charles Brown, OT, USC - Even in the wake of the Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher re-signings, I still think Charles Brown is a major option at this pick.

Aaron Rodgers received much better pass protection since losing to the Buccaneers, but things ultimately fell apart in Arizona. Relying on Clifton to protect Rodgers' blind side for another year is not a good idea. Green Bay's No. 1 priority this offseason is finding a top-notch left tackle for Rodgers. Ted Thompson usually opts to draft the best player available, and you can make the argument that Brown fits that distinction here.

56.  Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest - I think this is a very possible landing spot for Dexter McCluster. Green Bay's offense is already explosive; imagine how much better it will be with a prolific weapon like Dexter McCluster. McCluster would also cure Green Bay's kick-returning woes.

87.  Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, CB/KR, IUP - Al Harris, who just turned 35, is coming off ACL surgery. Tramon Williams played well as a substitute, but with Harris and Charles Woodson getting, as Emmitt would say, "long in the mouth," the Packers need to look into obtaining a young corner. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah had five return touchdowns for Indiana of Pennsylvania in 2009.

120.  Larry Asante, SS, Nebraska - Another upgrade for a secondary that was torched by Kurt Warner. Atari Bigby always seems to be hurt.

23.  Charles Brown, OT, USC - The Packers allowed a league-leading 51 sacks last season. A good number of those were due to Aaron Rodgers' tendency to hang on to the football far too long, but the offensive line could certainly be upgraded. Charles Brown has flown under the radar this offseason, but he legitimately has the athleticism to develop into an elite left tackle. With unproven players like Anthony Davis and Bruce Campbell receiving much of the attention, Brown could end up being a real steal in the late 1st.

56.  Jahvid Best, RB, California - Best would be the perfect compliment to Ryan Grant.

87.  John Jerry, OG, Mississippi - Jerry could push Josh Sitton for the starting RG position.

23.  Charles Brown, OT, USC - Brown surprised many by checking in at 305lbs at the combine, which should keep his stock near the back end of Round One. He is the perfect left tackle in a zone blocking scheme and should help keep Aaron Rodgers healthy.

56.  Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest

Robert Davis - Footballs Future

________________________________

23.  Mike Iupati, G, Idaho - The Packers have brought back their two offensive tackles, Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher, which helps for the short term. Iupati can start at guard right away and take over tackle duties down the road. (Previous pick: Charles Brown)

________________________________

23.  Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida - After their switch to a 3-4 defense last offseason the Packers got by with the parts they had for the most part. However, adding a rush linebacker will be near the top of their priority list in the draft and Jason Pierre-Paul is one of those guys who just wow's you with his natural athleticism.

56.  Rodger Saffold, OT, Indiana

87.  Amari Spievey, CB, Iowa

23.  Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee - Williams is a very good DT and considered to be the third top DT in this 2010 NFL Mock Draft. I previously had Brian Price ahead of him but Price is not as versatile as Dan Williams and Williams can fit more Schemes. The Packers have tried a couple years to get a great DT in the middle and I think that they do it with this pick here.

56.  Ciron Black, T, LSU The Packers get a player that most likely is going to be a Right Tackle in the NFL.

87.  Joe Mcknight, RB, USC

120.  Sam Young, OT, ND

23.  Taylor Mays, S, USC - Mays' NFL draft stock dropped a little bit this year but he has great size at the safety position. Some teams are concerned with his covering skills and how he plays the play action. I think he will be a great player in the NFL and he is one of the top DB's in my 2010 NFL Mock Draft. He had a great combine and I think the Packers could really use Taylor Mays in the secondary. They biggest need was OT but they resigned Chad Clifton to fill that hole. Look for the big hitting Taylor Mays to be pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2010 NFL mock draft.

56.  Anthony Dixon, RB, Mississippi State - Dixon is a big, powerful runner. He did a great job of improving his stock for the 2010 NFL mock draft. After a great career at Ole Miss, I think he will have similar success in the NFL.

23.  Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas - With Clifton and Tauscher back in the fold, no reason for the Packers to reach for an OT here. That can be addressed in round 2. So the Packers go for an impact player - the perfect bookend for Clay Matthews. Big, strong, fast, agile, fluid, Kindle is all of these. Playing in the elephant position, Kindle lined up on both the left and right, with his hand down and standing as a LB. While Jerry Hughes may be a better pure pass rusher, Kindle is the complete package. Matthews and Kindle on the same D would be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. (Al Bracco - Draft Tek Packers Analyst)

56.  Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest - Ghee has the size and speed the Packers covet at the cornerback position. A physical corner and great leaper, Ghee can play zone or man coverage. His technique and footwork are sometimes lacking, which results in Ghee being somewhat inconsistent. With the right coaching, Ghee could develop into a very good corner in the league. (Al Bracco - Draft Tek Packers Analyst)

87.  Larry Asante, SS, Nebraska

120.  Kyle Calloway, OT, Iowa

151.  Rahim Alem, OLB, LSU

________________________________

23.  Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland - One of the big surprises for novices coming out of the combine was the lightning-quick 40 time posted by Campbell at 4.85. But people who know Maryland football have been aware of Campbell and his workout warrior reputation. The Packers signed Chad Clifton to a new contract recently, but the team desperately needs an injection of youth to its offensive line. Campbell could provide a boost to a unit that had trouble at times protecting QB Aaron Rodgers in 2009.

Beannachtai na feile Padraig...

Happy St.

Paddy's Day!

History Of St. Patrick's Day...

St Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17th in commemoration of that historical figure's act of driving the Norwegians out of Ireland. It seems that centuries ago, many Norwegians came to Ireland to escape the bitterness of the Norwegian winters. Ireland was having a famine at the time and food was very scarce. The Norwegians were eating almost all the fish caught in the sea, leaving the Irish with nothing but potatoes.

St Patrick, taking things into his own hands, decided the Norwegians had to go. Secretly he organized the IRATRION (Irish Republic Army to Rid Ireland of Norwegians). Irish members of IRATRION sabotaged all the power plants in hopes the fish the Norwegians kept in refrigerators would spoil, forcing the Norwegians to a colder climate where their fish would keep. The fish spoiled, all right, but the Norwegians, as everyone knows, thrive on spoiled fish.

Faced with failure, the Irish sneaked into the Norwegians fish storage caves in the dead of night and sprinkled the rotten fish with lye, hoping to poison the Norwegian intruders. But, miraculously, the Norwegians thrived on this new concoction and dubbed the smelly lye-soaked fish "Lutefisk".

Matters became even worse for the Irishmen when the Norwegians started taking over the Irish potato crop and making lefse. Poor St. Patrick was at his wits end, and finally on March 17th, he blew his top and told the Norwegians to go to Hell. And it worked. All the Norwegians left Ireland and moved to Minnesota.

*** The undoubtedly true History Of St Paddys Day is an encore post from March 2008 or earlier... turns out it was March 2007.

ok Beer Kid, someone's gotta bring this board out of its off-season slumber. Let it be me.

Farwell Aaron Kampman. An unfortunate victim of the 3-4. Good Packer and great person. At least he's not going to da bearz, I think they were courting him ...

So far it seems like da bearz have made the biggest splash in free agency. But they have to. They suck.

Cheers everybody

Loving' the Favre Watch up here in MN. The chokers are now going to have to deal with the Waffler and showing they are not making any moves toward a QB who may NOT choke in the big game. ByeQueens at least are consistent!!!! TT needs to get active in the Free Agency, LT would be a nice addition to the backfield? Any others with thoughts on this. Let's not get to quiet on how we feel. I am excited for the 2010 season...:0)

Hey BeerKid...... Read somewhere that if Butt Farve retires this year, his last pass that he threw for every team he played on, will have been an INT. Falcons, Packers, Jets and Vikes. I haven't checked it out though. But, if true, I'd bet it would be a record maybe to never be undone.

Andy, All everyone talks about is BF and how he makes everyone better. When the big game came around, he had a tendency to through an interception. 19 years an only one superbowl. I'm not sure the Packer receivers are a big step down from the Rams. As you saw this year in Minnesota, the receivers are always better when they have a good QB throwing to them. The point I am trying to make is that in the big game BF couldn't get the job done. He has proven that many times and proved it again this year.

Game day bumps and bruises. Favre may pull the wool over the eyes of alot of fans, but his effort was wasted in Queensland. Many a Viks fan's wife ends up looking worse than that after an ugly loss.
