Remembering Don Hutson... |
![]() | Here's an old story by Jim Culberson published back in 1945 by the Portsmouth N.H. Herald the friday before Don Hutson and the Green Bay Packers came to Boston to play the Yanks. Yes, you read that right, the Green Bay Packers ended up beating the Boston Yanks the following Sunday 28-0. Don Hutson lead the Packers in scoring and TD's for 11 straight seasons from 1935-1945, he lead the NFL in scoring 5 straight years from 1940-44, and ended up with 105 career TD's for the Green Bay Packers. Remembering George...
| George W. Calhoun, a man that we here at Packer Palace are trying to model our lives on, the first one to really push the idea of Green Bay Packer Football and heavy drinking. Here's one for you George!!! May your name always be remembered in the annals of Packer lore. |
| Cal went on the road with the Packers as traveling secretary and publicity man. He treated the big city sports editors just like he did the boys in John Coppes saloon. And they ate it up. First thing he'd do when he arrived in town was order multiple cases of beer and cakes of ice and fill his bathtub with both. Then he'd get on the phone, to Red Smith at the Herald-Tribune, Art Daley at the New York Times. "The Packers are in town: the beer's in the tub; come on over." Cal's hotel room would be the mecca for all the famous sports figures while the Packers were in town. And next day the New York Times would carry a full column by Daley on "The Big Bay Blues, The Professional Lindbergh Team With the College Spirit, The Davids of the Sports World," all spoon-fed to the writer by Cal. Other pro teams were lucky in those days to get a paragraph in the Times when they came to town. from the obituary for George W. Calhoun by John Torinus of the Appleton Post-Crescent. |

Hank And Herb...
| From the Packers.Com website, "Letters To Lee Remmel" article. Lee: I have been reading your comments for almost sixty years and I am convinced that nobody in any professional sport knows more about his/her team than you! What is your favorite Hank Gremminger story? I am a Green Bay native but my wife and I now live in a house built by Hank. Also, Hank was our County Commissioner when he died a few years ago. - John (Weatherford, TX) |
![]() This isn't the actual photo of Hank scoring his TD against the Vikings, but both he and Herb Adderly will be forever remembered here at Packer Palace for snatching victory away from Minnesota Vikings. | LR: John, my favorite story about Hank Gremminger involves the most productive play of his 10-year Green Bay career. The circumstances were: The Packers, playing the Vikings at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minn., on October 13, 1963, held a tenuous 30-28 lead with 2 minutes remaining in the game. But the Vikings were then at the Green Bay 3-yard line and lining up for a "gimmee" -- and presumably game-winning -- field goal by Fred Cox. Fortuitously, Packers cornerback Herb Adderley swept through to block the kick and Hank alertly pounced upon the loose football and raced 60 yards to a decisive touchdown -- the only touchdown, incidentally, of his NFL career. Jerry Kramer kicked the extra point and the Packers prevailed, 37-28. |
