Speak Out Spew Off...

Best I post all this analysis here at Packer Palace then letting it get lost in the comment section over at PFT where the idea after much thought, was given birth. The NFL has delayed the release of big-time games in this year's upcoming schedule. Usually by now, they've released the opening weekend games, or the Thanksgiving day games, but not so this year. Rumor had it that the NFL Commissioner Goodall wants to reconfigure the schedule to have more divisional matchup games the last 2 weekends of the year. So I decided to use NFL.Com's resources to look some things up.

So what happened last year in 2009...
    week 17 games: 6 divisional, 8 conference, 2 inter-conference
    week 16 games: 5 div, 9 conf, 2 inter-conf
    week 11 games: 6 div, 8 conf, 2 inter-conf
    week 2 games: 7 div, 5 conf, 4 inter-conf
    week 1 games: 7 div, 7 conf, 2 inter-conf
in 2008...
    week 17 games: 9 div, 5 conf, 2 inter-conf
    week 16 games: 4 div, 8 conf, 4 inter-conf

So it looks like the NFL just wants to go back to what it did at the end of the 2008 year and get some 9 divisional games matched up... allegedly to keep the games competitive and stop teams from tanking the games on purpose. I don't think it takes a divisional rival to be a spoiler, look at what has happened to the Packers from 2006-2008, we played the Bears at the end of the year those 3 years, they tanked in 2006, Pack finished 6-10; in 2007, the Pack tanked and yet finished 13-3; next year a competitive game, Pack finished 6-10. Tells us absolutely nothing about what teams are thinking when it comes to resting some players and being ready for the playoffs..

Looking at last year's standings - only 2 divisions had teams with double-digit wins - the NFC East with the Cowboys(11 wins) and Eagles(11), Vikings(12) and Packers(11) so I'm now being led to believe that the NFL is currently trying to get away from scheduling the best games possible at the end of the year to schedule a sure-fire hit divisional game between rivals as the game on TV. I rather liked last year's finish between Green Bay and Arizona, a matchup between playoff bound teams, so the Cardinals eventually layed down and then re-grouped the following week to beat us in the 1st round of the playoffs.

...besides, how many big games can be on TV at given time. Just one by my count, whichever game the Green Bay Packers are playing.

Where's the April Fools stuff??? You gotta come up with somethin'...........

1) Thompson fired, replaced by Belacheat...
2) Favre makes YouTube apologize to Ted...
3) Packer pre-season games will be "Free"...
4) Goodell makes gridiron smaller so players don't run so fast/hit so hard...
5) Games shortened to 12 minute halfs to save on energy...
6) Goodell decides overtime to be two, 12 minute quarters...
7) Goodell decides that if game goes into overtime, the teams MUST use second string QB's and running backs...

I know you and the "Scout" can come up with something better than these...

Boz

Hey Boz, yeah we can be lame... but after seeing what NFL Network's Rich Eisen did to Chargers Shawne Merriman about the NFL laying down a sack-dance fine and possible suspensions... go check out the video - http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d817496a0/Merriman-gets-punk-d. Yup, it's hard to compete with the Pro's.  BK

The Pack should try to pick up Alex Brown. This guy is a player. He has talent. TT will always want to pick up talented players, especially when that player now hates the Bears. You always want guy as good as him on your team. The Pack will find a place to use him.

fbg3

Hey fbg3, I don't know, I think the Packers have their players and their money allocated already to the D-Line... though, if Johnny Jolly gets in serious trouble over his cough syrup court date, the Pack will need someone.  BK

I am dying for the 2010 regular-season schedule to be released. Why, oh why, is the wait so long..?? Could it be that I need to get a life? Nah. That can't be it.

#66 Chica

Hey Chica, This year they have decided to make we fans wait forever... so all of us who have no lives will be in flux for a little a few weeks longer... it will be out before the draft at the end of the month.  BK

Hey Perry, for "those who have sown the Brett Favre wind have no right to bewail it's following whirlwind." At least that's what I'm going to start telling Vikqueen fans later this year.  BK

How about a update on Justin Harrell?? Anybody heard anything???

dfarmer

Hey dfarmer, believe it or not, even during my sabbatical I did hear coach McCarthy mention the status of DT Justin Harrell, and guess what? Harrell is where he is every year at this time, healthy, looking the best physical condition ever... until Breno Giacomini or Allen Barbre jam him in practice and then he'll be done for the year again. Otherwise I believe he's eager to quench our doubts about his play. Actually here's the quote from an article: Packers coach Mike McCarthy says the team feels DE Justin Harrell has "turned the corner" with regard to his chronic back injuries. That's from 31 days ago... I've heard that before several times. I'll believe it when I see it.  BK

Does anyone really want to hear anymore about Justin Harrell? Seriously??? The less the better.

CAMP

...but but but don't you believe 'em when they say that he is finally healthy and over his chronic back problems that have plagued him his whole NFL career. yeah, after the 4th time I don't either.  BK

BK, thanks for update. Is that a soundbite from last year?? Get's lonely over here in MN so info is important. Still hoping we can get something out of JH but that hope has as much as my bracket picks right now.

dfarmer

Hey dfarmer, yeah it's hard to tell, but the update from McCarthy really did happen the 1st week of March 2010. The coach was just repeating himself from previous years...  BK

BK and Beer Scout,

I’m really glad to see all the changes that King President Goodell wants. Us NFL Fans need all this manipulation change. Change is always good… whether it makes sense or not!
  • The NFL really needs to make the overtime more fair. There’s a ton more commercial time money that can be sucked out of the Fans made! Never mind that you just had 60 minutes to beat the other team…
  • We definitely need to manipulate change the schedule too! After all, everyone knows that the conference games in the beginning of the season don’t mean a thing! It’s only the last few games that count, just like the sportscasters say! You know the "MUST WIN" games! There’s only a couple "MUST WIN" games, and hopefully, King Roger can manipulate change them to the end of the season.
  • Splitting the NFL Draft into three days is also a stroke of pure greed waste of time genius! Way to go King Roger! Why not make it seven consecutive nights? Totally ignore any parties or any other traditions that fans have done for years on Saturdays! We all know that TV revenue rules!
  • I love it when you reschedule the mid/late season games so you can suck provide additional TV revenue to the NFL! Never mind the hundreds of thousands of ticket paying NFL Fans attending the games that you inconvenience!
I also propose that if one team is more than 14 points ahead, that the other team automatically gets the ball on the opponents 20 yard line – TWICE in a row. Even if they don’t score, they get 7 points for trying. It would put them on the NFL Network "Red Zone", so even more people would want to buy it!

Besides, King Roger needs to protect these multi-million dollar players from being embarrassed, or heaven forbid, feel bad, when the other team kicks their asses (Packers included)!

Well, keep making changes King Roger! You rock!
